I am currently learning Spanish for my High School Elective this year and we got to the "past participles". I really struggled making sentences due to the lack of verbs I knew (and I sucked at memorizing). The cognate tricks blew my mind, now I know a lot more verbs than I thought I did. Hey. Paul. I realize this almost never happens, but could you do a video on placing subject pronouns in a sentence? It may only happen rarely, but sometimes it will, like when you're reading the Bible. "Yo se que mi Redentor vive." The one I figured out myself was "Yo lo se." Or, "Yo no lo se." I think those are right....

Your explanation of the subjunctive has made the (grammatical) lyrics to "Robarte un Beso" make so much more sense

In the sentence: El evento en el que participamos fue divertido....the old Preterito o Imperfecto bugaboo raised it's head, because I was thinking "era" instead of "fue". When we say "we participated in" should that definitively be Preterito?

Are these lessons good for learning European Spanish? That's the type I'm learning.

It helps if we first know what the proper meaning is supposed to be in English, which is not always conveyed clearly with the questionable choices of particular word combinations. It's better to say something like "I'm pleased that Juan typically arrives early" - or words to that effect. The subjunctive mood is actually not needed, although it could indeed be employed if there's a reason, for example, to express any doubt in the conclusion you've made regarding Juan's arrival. If you're making a statement of fact - even if the fact is regarding your opinion - then just use the present form of the verb, rather than the subjunctive form.

Great job. Really helpful seeing conjugated verbs back to back in the example "Los perros de los que me quejé estan afuera" because that's something I always struggle with wondering does "que" have to go there.

I'm actually confused why there is the "Le" in the beginning of the second sentence at 8:08 minutes? Why not just Di Las flores a Maria? I gave the flowers to Maria. SVO Le di las flores a María. OVS Las flores se las di a María.

Spanish is certainly more consistent than English on this point. Officially, we should not end English sentences with prepositions, but in practice, that can sometimes sound absurd. My favorite old joke, attributed to Winston Churchill, is that supposedly someone once said to him that he should not end sentences with prepositions, to which he replied, "Quite right. That is something up with which I cannot put!"

I’ve been studying Spanish for months and this video finally described the placement of direct object pronouns! Can’t thank you enough. And if no one else has said it, the hand gestures are great tools for expressing your meanings. Love it!

I'd say that "María es tan bonita" without an ellipsis and the corresponding intonation is something taken directly from English. It's a common way of speaking often heard in bad translations or among speakers from the USA, and sounds a bit odd.

Ojala’ derives from the Arabic phrase "in sha Allah”, (God willing or hopefully). There there are ca 4,000 words of Arabic origin in Spanish, 8% of the Spanish dictionary.

Hi Paul, thanks for this video. I’m having trouble, still, with knowing when to use “le” o “se” with verbs like casarse, or bañarse. You used “se casó” in one of your examples. Is that because this was reflexive? Would “le casó” ever be used in Spanish?
